The news came in last week that UK broadband speeds are rising, 18% from a year ago and by 60% since 2018. Thank goodness!
The reason is down to the availability of full-fibre technology and the need for homes and businesses to upgrade to faster speeds as their needs change.
Before we get too excited, the UK still languishes in 48th in the world for internet speed. Check out this graph to see the other countries above us. Monaco takes the top spot.
The good news is the Government has a target of providing Gigabit capability to 85% of the UK by 2025. This is thanks to our partners CityFibre and ITS, who are building their own fibre networks at a rapid rate.
Is 5G going to replace business broadband? The short answer is not yet. Yes, it makes for a very good temporary solution or backup connection if your main internet line goes down, but we’re simply not there yet. It’s going to be a few years before we see 5G unshackled to provide low latency and high-speed services.
We rely on the internet so much and take it for granted that we often don’t even realise it’s there until we get some buffering or someone cuts through your cable. Building resiliency into your connectivity is something that is often over looked, more on that further down.
Talking about cutting through cables… according to The Sun (!), undersea cables were cut by a Russian ‘research’ ship last Thursday, disconnecting the Shetland islands from the internet and any communication with the mainland.
In this month’s bulletin, we cover the cost of slow internet speeds, Faster Britain, how to improve your internet connectivity and more.
Let’s get into it…
UK BROADBAND SPEEDS HAVE INCREASED
Figures from Ofcom claim the median average speed of a home broadband connection has reached 59.4 Mbps – a 60% increase on the average speed recorded in 2018 of 37 Mbps.
